Start Here: The Sunland Starter Army

If you’re starting a new Sunland army, this is the obvious place to begin.

Based on Highlands Miniatures’ July 2023 Sunland release, the Sunland Starter Army gives you a balanced collection of infantry, ranged troops, cavalry and artillery.

The bundle contains:

• 15 Sunland Troops with Halberds, including command
• 10 Sunland Troops with Spears
• 10 Sunland Troops with Swords, including command
• 10 Sunland Arquebusiers
• 1 Sunland Great Cannon
• 3 Great Cannon Crew
• 5 Sunland Pistoleers
• 4 Pistoleers with Repeater Guns
• 1 Pistoleer with Hand Mortar

That gives you 59 miniatures in total, with enough variety to form the backbone of a proper rank-and-flank fantasy army.

You’ve got several different infantry blocks to build your battle line around, Arquebusiers and a Great Cannon providing ranged support, and Pistoleers adding a fast-moving element to the force.

Buying the models individually would come to approximately £115.37, while the complete Starter Army is £99.99.

Already Have the Infantry? Bring Out the Heavy Artillery

If your Sunland army already has its core troops, the Sunland Army Reinforcements bundle takes things in a rather different direction.

Based on Highlands Miniatures’ June 2024 release, this set is packed with artillery, cavalry and some of the most distinctive centrepieces in the entire Sunland range.

Building a Bigger Sunland Force

The two bundles have deliberately been kept quite different.

The Starter Army gives you the foundation:

Infantry → shooting → cavalry → cannon

The Army Reinforcements then adds:

Artillery → centrepieces → additional cavalry → characters

Put the two together and you have the beginnings of a very substantial Sunland collection, while still being able to expand with individual units from the wider range.

If you already own some of the models, you can of course build your force individually instead.

Why We’re Bringing Back Older Highlands Miniatures Releases

One of the advantages of carrying such a large Highlands Miniatures catalogue is that there are some fantastic releases buried in the archives.

Rather than treating those models purely as individual products, we’re going back through some of the original monthly releases and looking for sets that make sense as complete army or reinforcement bundles.

It means newer players can discover models they may have missed first time around, while existing collectors get a straightforward way to expand an army — with a saving for buying the models together.

The Sunland bundles are the first examples of this, but they certainly don’t have to be the last.
